Examples of accreditations and standards that may be useful in building your Code of Practice compliance case

We have researched business accreditations, standards and resources that may be useful to you in creating your Code of Practice statement of compliance. Please note however that this is not an exhaustive list.

We have also undertaken some research on client satisfaction surveys which will help you if you are developing or redesigning your client satisfaction processes. You can download this document on the right.

British Standards Institute (BSI)

  • BSI is the UK’s National Standards Body (NSB); it is a non-profit independent distributing standards organisation.
  • BSI develops, publishes and markets standards and related information products for best practice in all sectors or the working environment.

Specific BSI standards

1. ISO 14001: Environmental Management System
    Formerly BS EN ISO 14001: 2004 (replaces BS EN ISO 14001:1996)

  • Specifies the requirements for an Environment Management System but does not state specific criteria for environmental performance.
  • Provides a framework to continually improve an organisation’s environmental performance through controlling the impact of its activities, products and services.

2. ISO 9001: Quality Management Systems
    Formerly BS EN ISO 9001: 2008 (replaces BS EN ISO 9001: 2000)

  • Sets the standard for not only quality management systems, but management systems in general.
  • Helps organisations succeed through improved customer satisfaction, staff motivation and continual improvement.
  • Specifies requirements for a Quality Management System, in which organisations demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products that meet customer and regulatory requirements, as well as aims to enhance customer satisfaction through applying the system.

3. BS ISO/IEC 27000:2009: Security

  • Provides guidance for businesses to develop and implement a framework for managing the protection of information, such as financial information, intellectual property, and employee details, or information entrusted to them by customers or third parties.

4. BS ISO/IEC 27001:2005: Information Security
    Formerly BS 7788-2:2002

Provides a step-by-step guide for organizations intent on implementing and continually improving an effective Information Security Management System.

5. BS EN ISO 9002: 1994: Quality systems

  • This is a model for quality assurance in production, installation and servicing.
  • BS 7799-3: 2006: Information Security Management Systems
  • Focuses on effective information security through an ongoing programme of risk management activities. It is intended to be applicable to all organisations of all types, size and nature.

The Matrix Standard

  • This quality standard is for organisations that provide information, advice and guidance on learning and work.
  • The Matrix Standard offers assessments and accreditations for these organisations to ensure their services meet certain standards.
  • Services can be for external (external clients) or internal services (staff).

Investors in People

  • This standard focuses on the transformation of business performance.
  • Assessment provides firms with what they need to achieve, rather than how to achieve these objectives.
  • Assessment criteria are tailored to firms’ business plan, performance targets and key priorities.
