The UK consulting market is the largest outside the US with a current value of around £8bn and is helping to deliver some of the most innovative and ambitious organisational change projects in the world.
The MCA was formed in 1956 to represent the consultancy industry to its clients, the media and government. Management consultancy is an increasingly important industry for the UK economy with management consultancy revenues for 2006 estimated at £8bn. MCA members represent around 70% of the UK consulting sector, employ around 20,000 management consultants and work with the FTSE100 and all government departments. Eight of the top ten UK-based consulting firms (by consulting fee income) are members.
The MCA supports its member firms with a range of services including events, publications, interest groups and public relations. The Association also works with its members to attract the top talent into the industry. The MCA provides advice on the selection and use of management consultants and is the main source of data on the UK market.

In order to join the MCA, firms must have been in practice in the UK for at least three years and employ at least ten consultants on a full time basis. They must also practice management consultancy as a strategic activity, offering at least two main consultancy services such as strategy, marketing, IT, HR; and they must offer fact-based advice and customised solutions.

Much of the MCA’s work is externally focused. It provides data on the sector and advises purchasers on the selection and use of consultants, whilst stimulating the market and demonstrating the value of consultancy through a successful media relations programme.
Member firms are also able to benefit from a range of services including networking events, interest groups and benchmarking. The MCA provides advice on the selection and use of management consultants and is the main source of data on the UK market. As the demand for consulting continues to grow, the MCA is also working with its members to attract the best people into the industry and to ensure that they are developed and rewarded appropriately.
High Standards
MCA membership is increasingly regarded as a mark of quality and one of the organisation’s key objectives is to maintain high standards within the sector by ensuring that member firms meet stringent entry criteria and adhere to a code of professional conduct.
MCA members must comply with industry criteria as well as professional and ethical standards. They must reaffirm their compliance annually and are audited regularly. The MCA membership requirements ensure that each member firm has established a sound reputation for its work based on extensive experience and that its consulting staff as a whole are experienced and well qualified.
