Atkins with High Speed Two

The Government Construction Strategy identified Building Information Modelling (BIM) as one of the key enablers to reduce wasted time and cost in the UK’s construction industry.  The strategy mandated the use of ‘fully collaborative 3D BIM (BIM Level 2) with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic as a minimum by 2016 on all publicly funded projects’.

This is a step towards a more digital and data-centric process which requires a set of connected, integrated and fully governed information systems. New processes require design and handover of information to be produced in a consistent way across managed channels, using an agreed set of collaborative and integrated processes that update and control design, construction and asset data to provide a single reference source.

HS2 is committed to the use of BIM to deliver a high speed, integrated and operating railway. As a high performing, innovative organisation, HS2’s aspirations are to deliver value for money through the production and delivery of a Virtual Railway. This joins up all necessary data, which can be visualised and interrogated for different purposes using cutting edge technology.

From early 2015 to November 2017, Atkins supported HS2 through a complex change programme, providing expert strategic advice and technical support to develop and implement BIM across the organisation and to help the wider supply chain utilise BIM to maximise savings and minimise waste.

The foundations put in place on the project will support HS2 to deliver its ambitious programme of work, future-proofing the approach taken today and leading industry in its vision for BIM application, not just as the railway is designed and constructed, but forwards into operation and maintenance in 2026 and beyond.
