Technology Transformation

Atos Amplify and National Grid have delivered Triton—a cloud-based Digital Twin and data visualisation tool that unlocks the strategic value of network data, enables near-instant generation of critical geographic and network insights, and accelerates future-ready electricity network planning towards Net Zero 2050.
A recent transformative partnership between Atos Amplify and National Grid, addressed critical challenges in modernising data processing and analysis at the centre of the UK’s electricity infrastructure. Triton, an innovative new Digital Twin and Data Visualisation tool, will help National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) accelerate how it plans the future electricity network, and supports the significant increase in energy demand needed to achieve Britain’s decarbonisation goals.
Traditional approaches to network modelling and planning processes relied heavily on manual data analysis. Triton consolidates thousands of datasets from Distribution Network Operators and Transmission Owners, automating complex processes and enabling scenario modelling. This helps to identify where reinforcement or new infrastructure will be required. Triton also feeds directly into NGET’s deeper monitoring and engineering tools, speeding up model configuration and enabling faster stress-testing of multiple network options to identify the strongest, most future-ready solutions. Together, these features enable more informed and flexible decision-making and will support NGET’s recommendations of future network upgrades.
The transformation was guided by a clear focus on business value, operational sustainability, and alignment with Net Zero 2050 ambitions. Atos and NGET adopted an agile delivery model: the first phase rapidly demonstrated the platform’s ability to handle disparate data and deliver immediate operational benefit, while the second phase expanded its capabilities and embedded it within daily planning processes. The solution, hosted on cloud platforms and built using modern, scalable technologies, emphasised low maintenance, optimised costs and future-proof adaptability.
Triton’s impact was immediate and measurable. By automating resource-intensive tasks, it could help reduce data processing backlogs by up to 70% and enabled near-instantaneous generation of critical geographic and network visualisations. This acceleration of insight supports more confident and proactive network planning, ensuring infrastructure investments remain aligned with evolving regulatory and societal requirements, such as the transition from petrol vehicles and the phase-out of gas boilers.
The programme was delivered through a disciplined blend of agile execution and strong governance, with benefits realisation embedded throughout. Atos worked closely with National Grid to ensure the platform was developed around real business needs, supporting a shift from siloed, specialist-dependent workflows to an empowered, data-driven culture. Comprehensive training, user guidance, and continuous feedback mechanisms ensured rapid adoption and ongoing evolution of the solution.
Triton has become an integral part of National Grid’s Net Zero Electricity Transmission team, fostering cross-functional collaboration and enabling a step-change in operational responsiveness. Its cloud architecture and open-source codebase ensure cost-effective scaling, robust security, and seamless integration with National Grid’s existing systems. The platform’s success was recognised externally with a major industry award, underscoring its role as a benchmark for technology-enabled infrastructure planning and data-driven innovation.
The Atos-National Grid partnership has delivered a sustainable, self-sufficient solution that not only unlocks the strategic value of network data but also accelerates progress towards decarbonisation goals. Triton stands as a testament to the power of digital transformation, collaborative innovation, and the enduring value of aligning technology change with clear business outcomes.
