EY with National Grid

Change and Transformation in the Private Sector

MCA Awards Finalist 2026

Delivering a human-centric change experience at National Grid to build the people and technology foundations for a clean, fair, and affordable energy future.

National Grid is at the forefront of one of the largest energy transformations within our generation. To support the energy transition, the People Digital Transformation Programme was launched, focused on improving the employee experience and operational effectiveness through a global people support model and scalable technology.

Over two years, the consulting firm played a key role in preparing the business for the cultural and mindset shift through a human-centric change experience, supporting over 30,000 impacted employees across the UK and US.

Key initiatives included the sequential deployment of 7 new global systems, designed with the user experience in mind. This would build the foundations to better attract, manage, develop and retain talent, who are at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future. Through improved people support and enabling technology, we would make colleagues’ lives easier, freeing up time to continue delivering critical operations that keep our energy running.

The differentiating change experience consisted of putting people first across the transformation journey, from senior leadership alignment to middle management support and end-user communications. Our commitment to employee listening and ongoing focus on the end-user experience drove real actions, shaping the design of an intuitive solution that balanced business and employees’ needs.

Additionally, our strong partnership with National Grid resources, enabled effective local delivery across 5 business units through tailored interventions and cultural nuances. This collaboration helped build confidence ahead of launch, unlocking ownership and accountability across the business, while building lasting change management capabilities for future transformations.
