While this increases productivity, it removes the essential training ground that enabled graduates to develop expertise through repetitive work. As firms reduce junior intake, the traditional talent pipeline is disappearing, leaving no clear replacement. Openside suggests an ‘accelerated apprenticeship’ model, where AI handles routine work and junior professionals gain direct exposure to senior-level thinking from the outset which is a proven approach, as seen in Germany’s manufacturing sector in the 1980s.
