Senior Consultant
EY
Whenever someone asks me what a consultant does, I struggle to answer in a neat sentence. Consulting is broad, constantly evolving, and almost impossible to summarise. I joined the EY graduate scheme in September 2022, and even now I’m struck by how varied the role can be and how much I continue to learn.
What I love most is how deeply the work centres around people. While problem solving, analysis, and structured thinking are core parts of the job, consulting is fundamentally about trust; earning, maintaining, and using it to help clients navigate ambiguity. I’ve found myself growing most in how I communicate, collaborate, and influence in fast moving and uncertain environments.
Hybrid working has largely shaped that experience with the combination of days at home and days onsite, one allows for deep thinking the other dynamic collaboration. Remote days give me the space to develop ideas, refine analysis, or shape narratives while moments in the office are spent brainstorming, running workshops, or simply catching up with colleagues to help spark creativity and project alignment. Hybrid working has taught me to be intentional and that every conversation needs to count.
A significant part of my consulting journey involved supporting largescale AI-enabled transformations for global supply chain organisations. These focus on using digital-intelligence and integration of data, forecasting, and advanced analytics to make faster, more informed operational decisions. My role spans shaping product vision with cross functional teams, driving global change, designing new processes, and partnering with the client to embed lasting adoption and impact. Seeing how predictive intelligence can modernise a traditional industry has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career to date.
I believe successful delivery depends as much on team culture as technical excellence. The strongest teams I’ve worked in are built on trust, openness, and a sense of shared commitment. Those foundations aren’t formed in formal meetings but grow through interactions like shared travel, workshop prep, and checking in on one another from time to time. This creates the glue that turns a group of individuals into a cohesive, resilient team. For anyone considering a career in consulting, I have one piece of advice: be curious, adaptable, and ready to learn. It’s not about having all the answers, but being willing to find, refine and challenge them. You’ll work with brilliant people, solve complex problems, and stretch yourself in unexpected ways. It’s fast paced and challenging but always rewarding.
Ultimately, a day in the life of a consultant isn’t defined by a strict routine. It’s defined by variety, collaboration, and helping clients navigate their toughest questions to create industry defining standards. For me, that’s what makes this career so compelling.
