Since starting my consulting career, I have been amazed not only by the diversity in projects, but also by the difference each individual week brings. During my MA studies, I was researching different careers and had a limited understanding of the consulting industry. I was under the misconception it was a repetitive job with ephemeral impacts; consultants applied the same plan of action to each new business, with little room for variation or nuance. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The projects we work on span an array of industries and challenges, from training NHS staff in new technological platforms which improve operating theatre usage, to supporting pharmaceutical companies reach the markets where greatest benefit can be achieved. The daily tasks range from interviews and data analysis to qualitative research and presenting insights to clients.
My work follows a hybrid model, with four days spent in the office or on client sites, and one day working from home. This balance allows me to enjoy the best of both worlds. The office days promote strong team collaboration, allowing us to brainstorm and problem-solve together. Meanwhile, the work-from-home day gives me a chance to tackle personal tasks and recharge, which is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
AI has also become an invaluable tool in my role. It helps streamline many of the repetitive tasks I encounter, such as summarising meeting notes or drafting basic outlines. This not only frees up more time for me to focus on the higher-value aspects of my work like analysis, writing, and creating presentations, but it also helps me stay productive. The ability to leverage AI in this way has been a game-changer for my efficiency and overall work-life balance.
Public purpose is a key motivator in my work as a consultant in the healthcare and life sciences sectors. One of my recent projects involved training staff to use a new technical tool designed to improve operating theatre utilisation. This ultimately helped increase the number of surgeries performed each day, which directly improved patient care and outcomes. Knowing that my work contributes to improving people’s lives, whether in small or significant ways, is incredibly rewarding.
If you’re considering consulting, it’s important to know that it offers a wide range of challenges, excitement, and unique experiences. It’s an excellent career for anyone eager to learn about different industries, people, and organisations. The work is dynamic, and no two days are the same, which keeps things engaging and never dull. There’s more to consulting than meets the eye.
