Consultant
4C Associates
Reflecting on the past three years in consulting, I realise just how much can happen in a such a short span. Working for a consultancy has challenged me to adapt, think critically, and build confidence in contexts that once felt intimidating. Each project has given me the opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge across various sectors, and that constant change has kept the work exciting and challenging.
One of the biggest surprises in my consulting career to date has been the variety in the work we get involved in. Being part of a smaller consultancy has given me exposure to the inner workings of an organisation, such as supporting bids for new business and developing in-house training programmes. The opportunity to work on these internal projects alongside client work appears to be relatively uncommon in the wider professional services field, and I am grateful to work for a company like 4C Associates that encourages their team to take ownership of these initiatives.
Every project has stretched me in new ways, but nothing has shaped my growth more than consistently pushing beyond my comfort zone. Like many professionals in the early years of their career, I have experienced feelings of imposter syndrome and self-doubt; however, working for a consultancy has given me the opportunity to push myself while knowing that I have a broad network of industry experts to draw on when I need support.
This has given me the confidence to consistently challenge myself in new settings, which means that every day on the job presents an opportunity to learn new skills and develop my industry knowledge. As I have progressed in my career at 4C Associates, that feeling of self-doubt has gradually been replaced by excitement to throw myself into the next challenge, knowing that I will come out the other end more confident and capable.
A day in the life of a young consultant is full of variety. What ties all these experiences together is the sense of growth. Consulting can be demanding, but it is equally rewarding for those who enjoy solving problems and working with others. Looking back, I can see how far I’ve come since my first project, and I’m excited to see where the next few years will take me. If the last three years are anything to go by, the only certainty is that there will always be something new to learn- and that’s exactly what keeps me motivated.
