If someone asked me whether consulting is a good career choice, I’d say it’s one of the most rewarding paths for those who are curious, adaptable, and eager to create impact across different environments. It challenges you intellectually, tests your resilience, and pushes you to keep evolving. But more than anything, it teaches you that no two problems or clients are ever the same.
While I’m still early in my consulting journey, I’ve found that my industry knowledge adds real value, especially when clients are looking for insights grounded in lived experience. Having worked directly in print, rail and logistics industries across direct and indirect procurement, I understand not just the theory but the practical realities, how decisions play out in day-to-day operations, and where friction points often lie. Dealing with these operational complexities and real-world constraints, have given me a practical perspective that I now bring to client work. It’s been a refreshing change to look at problems more strategically and holistically, helping organisations tackle transformation with greater clarity and impact.
Procurement today goes far beyond cost, contracts and delivery, it plays a critical role in meeting sustainability goals and managing long-term risk. Sustainable procurement helps organisations to mitigate business risk, build supply chain resilience, drive innovation, stay compliant and act responsibly. The principles of ethical sourcing, transparent supplier relationships, and robust governance are critical in today’s complex and fast-changing supply chains. It is about listening, adapting, and building trust quickly. Clients don’t just want answers, they want to feel understood, supported, and guided through uncertainty.
I’ve seen firsthand how AI can bring meaningful value to the procurement function. In my role, I’ve leveraged AI tools to generate insights, support analytical work, and create overviews of supplier services. By combining data-driven insights with practical experience and contextual understanding, I’ve been able to make faster, more informed decisions, contributing to more resilient and forward-thinking procurement strategies.
Working from home is now a normal part of my routine, and I’ve found that peace and quiet really helps with concentration especially when I have analytical work on large data sets to solve problems. Nothing replaces the energy of being in the same room with a client, and I’ve enjoyed regular visits to one of our clients based in Amsterdam. Being on-site helps build relationships and notice nuance you can’t capture over video calls.
A career in consulting lets you explore industries, influence decisions, and grow both professionally and personally. If you thrive on variety and care more about impact than routine, consulting might be the perfect fit. You will learn more in a year than many do in three!
