DAY IN THE LIFE OF A YOUNG CONSULTANT | ORLAITH MCENEANEY

Senior Consultant – Digital

OutForm Consulting

As a digital consultant at OutForm Consulting, I love the variety within my role. I work across a number of different sectors, both in digital and non-digital roles, with each project presenting new challenges and opportunities.

My academic background is in political science and throughout my time at university I was always interested in a career in management consulting. While writing my master’s dissertation on AI policy, I began developing my digital and data skills as I quickly realised, I wanted to be part of the digital transformations I was writing about. That has led to where I am today as a Senior Consultant in the Digital team at OutForm.

AI capabilities have grown significantly since I first researched the topic at university. In my day-to-day role, AI has increased my productivity, helping to reduce time on admin. For instance, leveraging AI-driven meeting transcription has enabled us to produce well-organised, high-quality notes and action items. This has been beneficial in internal brainstorming sessions and knowledge shares, allowing team members to engage more fully without the distraction of notetaking, increasing time for value-add work.

Our hybrid working model involves spending three days per week either in our own office or on client sites. I have found returning to client site particularly rewarding, as in-person collaboration, workshops, and relationship-building can significantly enhance the understanding of clients’ needs and elevate project outcomes. Every two months, our Belfast office hosts a “Connect Day”, where every member of the OutForm team from different base locations come together to share knowledge and work collaboratively in person. These all in days are a highlight in my calendar as I get the opportunity to catch up with colleagues outside of work at our social events.

At OutForm Consulting, we predominantly support organisations in the infrastructure and utilities sector. Contributing to transformational change in public sector organisations allows me to positively impact at national and local levels. It’s really rewarding when I visit a client site and notice teams using a dashboard or digital product developed by myself or the team to support operational decisions.

Beyond client work, I serve as one of the vice chairs of the Universities and Networks workstream on the Young MCA Executive Committee, as well as the Women’s Infrastructure Network Northern Ireland. Both platforms provide valuable opportunities to share insights from my consulting experience and to learn from my peers. I am passionate about sharing my experiences to those considering or beginning a consulting career, which adds meaning and purpose to my work.

Consulting is a fast-paced profession where each day presents unique challenges. For those who thrive on problem-solving and seek variety across industries, I believe consulting can be an excellent career choice.
