When I first stepped into consulting, I had an image of what it would be like. While some of my expectations were true, many aspects of the job have surprised me.
One of the most surprising elements of consulting is the diversity of projects and industries I get to work with. From airports to environmental impacts, the variety keeps the job exciting and intellectually stimulating. Each project brings its own set of challenges and learning opportunities, pushing me to constantly adapt and grow. It’s true the workload can sometimes vary, but I’ve learnt to enjoy the peaks and troughs.
Hybrid working hasn’t been that new to me as I studied at university through Covid, so I landed in the world of work being comfortable with virtual collaborative tools and channels. The flexibility to work from home has allowed for a better work-life balance, reducing the stress of constant travel. Virtual meetings and collaborative tools have made it easier to stay connected with clients and team members, regardless of location. This has allowed me to expand my network and work with experts around the country and the world.
Sustainability has become a crucial focus in many of our projects, and it’s a core ethos at Mott MacDonald. Clients are increasingly aware of their environmental impact and are continuously seeking ways to operate more sustainably. I have had the opportunity to work on several sustainability initiatives, including helping companies reduce their carbon footprint and target carbon net zero. These projects are particularly fulfilling as they align with my personal values.
As a management consultant, the concept of public purpose is paramount. It’s not just about driving profits for clients but also creating value for society in the projects I help to deliver. During my tenure I have taken part in various Corporate Social Responsibility projects such as our refugee initiative. This sense of purpose is what drives me and many of my colleagues in the consulting field.
For those considering a career in consulting, my advice would be to embrace the learning curve and stay adaptable. Consulting is a dynamic field that requires a blend of analytical skills, creativity, and interpersonal abilities. Be prepared for a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. It’s also important to develop strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically. Lastly, don’t underestimate the value of networking and building relationships, both with clients and within your own organisation. If you don’t know the answer, the next best thing is knowing someone who does.
Consulting is a rewarding career that offers endless opportunities for growth and impact. The diversity of projects, the hybrid working model, and the focus on sustainability all contribute to a fulfilling professional journey. If you’re passionate about solving complex problems and making a real difference, consulting might just be the perfect fit for you.
