Consultant
4C Associates
Following my transition from the Retail and Consumer industry to consulting at 4C Associates, I was amazed at how consulting can help to fully implement and embed change within an organisation, beyond simply identifying a cost drainer, pinpointing operational inefficiency or recognising strategic misalignment. The focus on delivering tangible outcomes and measurable results, rather than just process or cultural change, was particularly striking. The objective, external perspective that consultants provide often uncovers opportunities and efficiencies that organisations might overlook. This role is both rewarding and impactful, positioning consultants as catalysts for growth, transformation, and success in the ever-evolving business landscape.
Hybrid working has been a game-changer for me, offering a good mix of office and home-based work that generates a healthy work-life balance. The office environment is bustling, with scheduled social events that provide a great opportunity to connect with colleagues outside of work. On home days, I enjoy the quiet and focus it brings, allowing me to dive deep into strategic planning and analysis. This flexibility has enhanced my productivity and overall job satisfaction.
AI has become an integral part of my role by helping me to refine emails and support summarising meeting notes succinctly. This not only enhances productivity but also ensures that our communications are clear and impactful.
Sustainability is a key area of focus for me and the wider 4C team as we are a B Corp accredited business. I’ve been involved in a B Corp client screening process, ensuring we support clients who aim to make a positive impact on the world. This initiative is part of our commitment to social value and public purpose, which is incredibly important to me. Working on public sector projects over the past year has reinforced my belief in the importance of contributing to societal well-being. The form I developed for the ‘4C for Good’ initiative, which was launched in January 2025, is a key governance milestone for our B-Corp re-accreditation.
For anyone considering a career in consulting, my advice is to embrace the learning curve. Don’t let imposter syndrome take over or feel the need to be an expert in everything right away. If you’re someone who is inquisitive, enjoys variety, and is a logical thinker with good project management, active listening, and creative thinking skills, consulting is a great place to start your career. The exposure to different clients and industries is invaluable, and each new project is like starting a new job, offering endless opportunities for growth and development.
In conclusion, life as a business consultant is both challenging and fulfilling. The ability to make a tangible impact, coupled with the variety of work, across the public and private sector, and the opportunity to drive positive change, makes it a truly rewarding career. Whether you’re working on sustainability projects, leveraging digital resource, or helping clients achieve their goals, every day brings a new adventure.
