Graduate Strategic Consultant
Amey
As a graduate strategic consultant at Amey, working within the Asset Management Transformation team, my journey into consulting has been both exciting and enlightening. Coming from a background in chemical and sustainable engineering, I initially wondered how my technical expertise would translate into the consulting world. What has surprised me most about consulting is the sheer diversity of challenges and opportunities it presents. Every project is unique, requiring a blend of analytical skills, creativity, and strategic thinking. This dynamic environment keeps me constantly engaged and learning.
One aspect of my role that I particularly enjoy is hybrid working. This flexible approach allows me to balance collaborative office days with focused home working days. In the office, I thrive on the energy of teamwork, brainstorming sessions, and spontaneous discussions that spark innovative ideas. On home working days, I appreciate the quiet space to dive deep into complex tasks, conduct thorough research, and tick off items on my to-do list without interruptions. This balance enhances my productivity and job satisfaction.
AI has become an integral part of my work, especially when it comes to summarizing extensive reports and conducting market research. Leveraging AI tools helps me quickly gather and analyse data, identify trends, and generate insights that inform our strategic decisions. This not only saves time but also ensures that our recommendations are data-driven and robust.
One of the most rewarding projects I’ve been involved in is the Tideway London project. As part of the Training Systems Design Engineering team, I contributed to the training development for the SCADA system that will be used to control the 25km ‘super sewer’ under the River Thames. This project aims to reduce sewage overflows and improve water quality, making a significant impact on the environment and public health. Working on such a large-scale sustainability initiative has been incredibly fulfilling, knowing that our efforts contribute to a cleaner and healthier future.
Public purpose is a core value in my role as a management consultant. At Amey, we strive to deliver solutions that not only meet our clients’ needs but also benefit the wider community. Whether it’s through improving infrastructure, enhancing sustainability, or optimizing asset management, our work has a tangible impact on society. This sense of purpose drives me to excel in my role and continuously seek ways to make a positive difference.
For anyone considering a career in consulting, I would say it’s a path that offers immense growth and variety. Consulting challenges you to think critically, adapt quickly, and collaborate effectively. It’s a field where you can leverage your unique skills and experiences to solve complex problems and drive meaningful change. If you’re passionate about making an impact and enjoy a dynamic work environment, consulting could be the perfect fit for you.
