Paul Micallef, EY

Thought Leader Consultant of the Year

Paul recalls delivering his first speaking engagement at the Cradle of Humankind in South Africa, as the warm-up act for Al Gore – the face of climate action at the time. Gore’s impassioned speech about climate change and individual responsibility would set his own journey into motion.

Today, as EY’s Global Digital Grid leader, Paul is focused on helping the energy sector, governments and regulators to build a more sustainable, decarbonised energy system. For the last 15 years, he has worked with organisations around the world to drive this change, shaping and delivering some of the industry’s most critical programmes, such as national smart metering programmes in several countries, including the UK.

Paul founded and built the Digital Grid Solution to accelerate this transition within the energy sector. He has contributed directly to the industry strategy and approach through the development of market-leading insights on topics such as ‘the critical role people play in a digital transformation’ and ‘what COVID-19 has taught us about climate action.’ Paul has defined services and built technology that has been deployed internationally, as well as assembled specialised teams to address the many challenges associated with this change.

He has also presented perspectives and insights at over 25 international conferences on topics such as the Future role of the Distribution System Operator, and has brought together industry leaders from around the globe to share learnings and discuss approaches to complex issues, such as ensuring continuity of service during COVID-19.
