Performance Improvement in the Public Sector
IMPOWER’s team of consultants worked skilfully alongside frontline hospital staff to deliver changes that have already helped, and will continue to help, transform the quality of life for some of Surrey’s most vulnerable residents. The project significantly reduced both the average length of stay in hospital and demand from people waiting for an inpatient bed while delivering major cost avoidance at a time of immense financial pressure.
IMPOWER’s team of consultants worked skilfully alongside frontline hospital staff to deliver changes that have already helped, and will continue to help, transform the quality of life for some of Surrey’s most vulnerable residents.
They were brought in by partners within the county’s mental health system to help reduce the length of time patients spend in hospital while ensuring their outcomes are improved.
From the outset, the team employed a collaborative and empowering approach to changing the way clinicians work while bringing the voice of patients and their families into conversations and raising awareness of the community support that’s vital to successful and safe discharge from hospital.
As a result of interventions co-produced with clients across the partnership, there is now a more collaborative and consistent approach to supporting patient discharge which focuses on a person’s strengths, aspirations and needs.
The project significantly reduced both the average length of stay in hospital and demand from people waiting for an inpatient bed while delivering major cost avoidance at a time of immense financial pressure.
Crucially, the consultants built trust and co-designed new solutions while equipping clinicians to continue the process of change.
Charlotte Canniff, Joint Chief Medical Officer at Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care System, says:
“One of the key success factors for the programme was working with a partner that really under-stands and has credibility within both the NHS and local government… their recommendations have since informed system-wide and ICB [integrated care board] planning priorities and will be key to future resilience for mental health flow in the Surrey system.”
