Strategy
Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust (BHRUT) runs two large hospitals in Northeast London, covering a diverse population of over 750,000. Since the Trust was founded in 2000, it had struggled to provide the best quality care in an environment fit for patients and staff and in a way that was financially sustainable.
Previous strategies had not been embraced in full by staff, resulting in myths about what needed to change and why. We were asked to support a new ten-year clinical strategy that brought confidence to the Board would be delivered by clinical leaders and teams across the whole Trust.
We adopted a co-production approach to developing the strategy, ensuring that it was clinically led and clinically owned. This included embedding the Trust clinical strategy lead into our team to join all internal and Trust facing meetings. We took the time to listen to the worries and concerns of clinical teams and leaders to inform themes for a case for change and service model design.
Through a series of workshops and surveys, involving over 600 stakeholders, five transformational care models were developed, drawing on national and international best practice healthcare approaches. In addition, six “centres of excellence” were identified to create the best care services for the local population.
Our work resulted in the first clinical strategy at BHRUT with widespread clinical backing. BHRUT was able to use its strategy to respond to critical service changes to maintain safe, high-quality care following the onset of the pandemic.
