The European Union seek to develop a more cost effective and environmentally friendly energy system and market for Europe.
By removing barriers and setting harmonised rules for cross border exchanges of electricity the European Union is creating a competitive, cost effective and transparent market across Europe
The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) is the Irish state owned vertically integrated energy company operating in the Republic of Ireland and internationally. In the liberalised and competitive Irish market, ESB operates across the energy value chain including Generation (47% market share), Transmission & Distribution, and Retail (37% market share) with 2.3 million customers.
The I-SEM programme delivered ESB’s capability to transition to this new market and to play its role in integrating the Irish market to Europe, and therefore develop a cleaner more efficient energy system for the Irish citizen.
This was a major transformation for ESB’s trading capabilities and for the industry as a whole. As we move towards a more de-carbonised, decentralised, digital grid this will create new trading opportunities for ESB.
EY was engaged as the lead consultant in delivering a new business solution encompassing People, Process, Systems, Data and Governance capabilities enabling ESB to enter the new market.
