Management consultants should embrace leadership


According to Mott Macdonald, management consultants are answerable to their clients. Therefore, it can feel uncomfortable to fully adopt the role of leader. However, embracing leadership can lead to better outcomes.

This is what Mott Macdonald found when they were tasked with implementing a sustainability programme for an NHS Trust in the east of England. The study conducted showed five core leadership skills for management consultants within healthcare:

  1. Communication
  2. Empathy
  3. Humility
  4. Trustworthiness
  5. Flexibility

While it is naturally easier for expert management consultants to assume leadership based on their specialised knowledge, process management consultants work with people who are often far more knowledgeable than they are.
