The virtual world is a great leveller. We are all the same size on a small laptop screen. There are no impressive reception areas, smart offices with views, boardrooms, formal attire, hovering Executive Assistants or any of the ‘props’ which signal status and authority. Leaders are stripped of most of the subconscious messaging that signal that you have authority. Now most of us are ‘status naked’ our authenticity is exposed to everyone. Almost instantly, the ability to lead has become dependent on the strength of some quite specific higher order leadership and interpersonal skills that we may never have had to rely on or develop in the past. What can we do when we notice that we are not having the impact on our teams or our clients to be effective?
